Presenting Vuity Eye Drops for Treatment of Presbyopia
Submitted by Atlanta Vision Cataract and Laser Center on April 6, 2022
Have you started holding books and magazines at a distance in order to read them? Do you need brighter light in which to read? Are you squinting more often? If you are middle-aged, presbyopia is likely the culprit.
While glasses and contact lenses can correct this condition, the FDA recently approved Vuity eye drops for presbyopia treatment. It’s the first medication approved for this use. The surgeons at Atlanta Vision Cataract & Laser Center will discuss whether Vuity eye drops are the best treatment option for presbyopia during your appointment at our Atlanta office.
Also known as age-related farsightedness or age-related blurry vision, presbyopia is the gradual loss of the ability to focus on objects close by. Aging results in less flexible and harder eye lenses, making near vision more difficult.
Symptoms usually start appearing in a person’s mid-40s. They continue worsening until about age 65. It’s a common disorder. In fact, the majority of people aged 40 and up are eventually affected.
Vuity Eye Drops
In October 2021, the FDA approved the use of once-daily Vuity eye drops, made by Allergen, for presbyopia treatment. The active medication, pilocarpine, is an anticholinergic. It works by reducing pupil size, allowing patients to see items up close.
In studies, Vuity improved near vision without affecting distance vision. Studies also included LASIK patients, so the procedure is not a contraindication for Vuity use. Vuity does not replace reading glasses and other presbyopia treatment options.
Available only by prescription, Vuity’s use consists of placing one eye drop in each eye once a day.
Patients using eye drops for other reasons should wait at least five minutes after using Vuity before administering any other medications.
If you wear contacts, wait at least 10 minutes after using Vuity before inserting your lenses.
Store Vuity at room temperature.
Vuity Side Effects
Vuity is considered safe and effective. However, as with any medication, potential side effects exist. With Vuity, the most common side effects are redness and headaches. Use caution when driving at night when using Vuity. The same holds true if performing any hazardous activities in inadequate lighting.
