Give Yourself the Gift of LASIK This Holiday Season

Submitted by Atlanta Vision Cataract and Laser Center on December 13, 2020

Do you dream of having 20/20 vision without needing eyeglasses or contacts? Then use this holiday season to give yourself the gift of vision with a LASIK procedure. LASIK is safe, it gives you fast results, and you can look forward to a permanent improvement in your vision.

Since our patients sometimes worry about laser eye surgery, we want to assure you that you will receive exceptional care at Atlanta Vision Cataract and Laser Center. We have more than two decades of experience performing successful LASIK procedures for people in the Atlanta, Georgia, area.

Don’t hesitate to call and schedule an appointment if you want to learn more about LASIK and find out if you’re a good candidate for the procedure. In the meantime, here’s a quick rundown on the procedure.

Vision problems corrected with LASIK

If you already wear eyeglasses or contacts, you’re familiar with at least one of the three refractive errors that LASIK surgery corrects:

  • Myopia (nearsightedness)
  • Hyperopia (farsightedness)
  • Astigmatism, which affects your vision at all distances

Refractive errors are the result of problems with your cornea, which is the clear dome covering the front of your eyes. Your cornea uses its round shape to bend or refract light as it enters your eye. In this role, the cornea is essential for focusing light and giving you clear vision.

When the cornea is misshapen — even if it’s only slightly too steep, it’s too flat, or it’s shaped more like a football than a round ball — it can’t focus the light on your retina. That’s when you end up with one of the refractive errors we fix with LASIK.

LASIK reshapes the cornea

At your first consultation, we do a pre-LASIK eye examination to be sure you can safely have the procedure. We also create a three-dimensional map of the surface of your cornea. With the map, we can detect the smallest problem areas and determine if LASIK is the best treatment.

Once it’s time for your LASIK procedure, you don’t need anesthesia; you only need numbing eyedrops. You may feel some pressure during the surgery, but you don’t feel any discomfort.

To reshape your cornea, we use an advanced laser to gently and precisely remove microscopic pieces of corneal tissue. We can safely target your cornea because we use an advanced cold laser that doesn’t damage the surrounding tissues.

LASIK surgery is quick

Though you may be in the office for about two hours on the day of your LASIK surgery, most of that time is spent in pre-surgery preparation and post-surgery observation. The procedure only takes about 15 minutes for one eye and your actual time under the laser is about one minute.

Your vision may be hazy right after your surgery, but by the next morning it should be clear. You should notice the results immediately, with your vision improving and stabilizing over the next few days.

You may want to take a day to rest, or you may go back to work the next day. We recommend avoiding strenuous activities for at least a week so your cornea has time to heal.

LASIK supports your lifestyle

You may want LASIK surgery because you’re tired of wearing and cleaning eyeglasses or taking contacts in and out. Eyeglasses and contacts often get in the way of an active lifestyle.

You need to remove contacts before you swim or switch to sports glasses when you participate in athletic activities. And then there’s the issue of eyeglasses that slide down your nose while you’re reading or spending time outdoors.

All these issues seem small at first, but before long, corrective eyewear can get in the way. LASIK puts an end to that problem.
